E PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A longtime local politician who recently lost a bid to render to the General Associates was criminally charged on Tuesday with attempting to steal the political signs of some other candidate.

A witness identified Brian Coogan as the person who drove a motorbike up to a business firm at 141 Acme St. then directed his female rider to remove from a debate a sign for City Council candidate Bruce Rogers, according to Lt. Thomas Rush.

Only things went awry when "the motorcycle tipped over and [a different] stolen sign savage off the wheel," Rush said, and and then "they couldn't become the sign off" the fence because information technology was as well tightly secured.

Rush said that Coogan and his passenger stood the motorbike back up and drove off, leaving behind the dropped sign and the one on the contend.  Rogers, a candidate for Urban center Quango, later told the police that both signs belonged to him.

The witness identified Coogan from a photograph lineup at the police station, said Rush, adding that a 2022 Harley Davidson is registered to Coogan.

On Monday, Coogan, 46, was read his rights at the police station and declined to give a argument, said Rush. He agreed to plow himself in to District Court, Providence, on Tuesday, where he was arraigned on one count each of three misdemeanors: attempted larceny (the sign left on the fence), receiving stolen goods (the sign he dropped) and conspiracy.

Rush said the adult female, who was wearing a helmet, has not been identified.

Coogan lives at 109 Summit St., near the location where the attempted theft of the political sign took place. It's the same residence listed on entrada documents as the abode address of Anna Sousa, Rogers' opponent in the quango race.

"I'thousand divorced. I live with her," Coogan said when reached for comment. "She's not my girlfriend."

Coogan, a former state representative, denied stealing the signs and said the allegations are political retaliation.

Rogers and City Councilman Helder Cunha are political allies, he said, and Cunha defeated Coogan in the Autonomous master for the Business firm seat in District 64. Coogan is now mounting a write-in entrada to beat Cunha, who has no Republican foe.

"Those 2 are teaming up against me and trying to injure my candidate, which is Anna Sousa," he said.

"I'k not going to go and steal political signs," he said. "I'thou 46. I accept five children. That'south stuff that kids do."

Coogan said he recently distributed a flyer that was highly critical of Rogers and made allegations confronting him.

"I'grand proud of it. It'due south the truth," Coogan said. "This is repercussions. That'southward their all-time shot."
